Come Jan. 2, all the staff at the Mesa County Landfill will be county employees, a change aimed at reducing the number of employees and ultimately, costs.

The county’s five-year contract with Green Group Holdings expires at the end of 2015 and the county sought a replacement, said Pete Baier, deputy administrator for operations.

Bidders knew that the county also was considering operating the landfill with its own employees, a course it ultimately selected.

Operating the landfill in house means the county will keep 16 percent of revenues that the contractor is collecting as part of its agreements, which Baier said are standard in the industry.
